Svia Rothstein
I have put off writing this bio for far too long—years, in fact. Why? Well, my history does not follow a linear journey with clearly mapped out teachers, schools of choice or one, distinct training. Secondly, from a yogic perspective, it is counter-intuitive to focus on or highlight the self. All the same, here is my story in a nutshell: I began exploring yoga in Boulder Colorado while studying at the university there. Like most of us, a friend took me to a class and I came out an hour and a half later convinced that this was something good for me in so many ways. I finished that semester and the next regularly attending the Iyengar yoga classes, which focused on alignment principles. Since then, my love for the multi-faceted practice of yoga has led me to a diversity of trainings from Satyananda Yoga in Bihar, India to Ashtanga Yoga in Maui, to creative Vinyasa yoga in Venice, California and more. The cleansing Kriya work of Kundalini yoga and the soothing effects of Yin yoga have helped to round out my practice and diversify my skill-set for teaching. My most recent training focused on Prenatal Yoga as taught in the Khalsa Way Program, founded by renowned Kundalini teacher Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa in Hollywood, CA. It is with great delight that I teach both Prenatal and Mommy & Me classes here in Alaska. Over the years, people have asked what ‘kind’ of yoga I teach. My response: I choose not to label my classes, thus giving me the freedom to call upon all the great teachings I have had the privilege to explore.  I teach what I know and every class, I learn.
